Purulia District, West Bengal

The Story

Water scarcity is a regular threat to the people of Purulia, more particularly in summer and the gap between demand and supply of water has been widening over the years. This negatively impacts the health, social and economic indices of the inhabitants. Hence, although culturally rich, it is still backward from the development point of view. In this context, the West Bengal Piped Water Supply Project Purulia through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was designed to provide safe and adequate drinking water supply to people focusing on 9 blocks of Purulia District covering Manbazar -I, Barabazar, Hura, Puncha, Kashipur, Raghunathpur-I, Purulia-I, Purulia-II and Para- suffering from acute scarcity of potable water, by constructing piped water supply schemes, thereby improving health and quality of life in the district.

Hijli INSPIRATION jointly with Stesalit Systems partnered with the West Bengal Public Health Engineering Department in developing Capacity Building and Behaviour Change Communication strategy with a two fold aim –

  • Community sensitisation for generating demand for individual water connection
  • Institutional capacity building for Operation and Maintenance of the scheme

The Project was piloted in Manbazar– I Block

“I worked with Hijli INSPIRATION for 2.5 years as a Program Analyst and gained a lot of knowledge and experience. I have worked on a total of 12 projects during this period. My last project was a very interesting topic entitled "Participatory Convergent Planning focusing on Under-nutrition in Purulia District, West Bengal’. This was a pilot project and an attempt to provide valuable suggestions to policy makers especially at micro level such as block level, panchayat level and village level to help them to identify exact problems of under -nutrition and differentiate between mal-adaptation and true adaptation strategies through limited resources”.
