The Story

The concept of Unsafe Migration, however, includes those migrants who, in many ways, are victimized as a result of migratory experience, including victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants victims of their smugglers. Unsafe migration is often used as coterminous with human trafficking. The criticality lies in the fact that migration streams are usually strongly segmented and thus patterns are not uniform and undocumented.

With this in the backdrop the study aimed at contributing to an important research gap on independent, evidence–based insight into what are the actual attributes and what is the estimated magnitude of unsafe migration in the two study areas and  its effect on women and children in the development process. Both Kumargram and Namkhana are structurally vulnerable. In Namkhana the geo-physical and climatic factors cause a serious threat to life and livelihood while in Kumargram the socio-political context in terms of insurgencies and closure of tea gardens has led to widespread unrest affecting livelihood opportunities.

The study would enable GI to formulate a robust strategy in line with its commitment of working for the most vulnerable to intervene in an issue which is universally acknowledged as one major catalyst of human vulnerabilities.
